What this letter does
Every school in Australia — government or non-government — has obligations under the Disability Standards for Education 2005, made under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth). These Standards require schools to:
- Consult with the student or their parent/carer to understand how the disability affects their education
- Make reasonable adjustments so the student can participate on the same basis as students without disability
- Review those adjustments over time as the student's needs change
This letter is sent directly to your child’s school — not to a government body. It invokes the school’s existing legal obligation. A formal diagnosis is helpful but is not required to make this request.
